Buddhist memorial services are also known as “memorial service”. It is a ceremony where the bereaved family remembers the deceased and invites a monk to recite sutras and burn incense. In Buddhism, it is done in order to be reborn in the Pure Land.

It varies according to religion and sect, but according to the Jodo Shinshu sect, one is led to the Pure Land when one dies.

What is law?

A series of events including the chanting of sutras and the subsequent dinner are called memorial services. Hoji refers to Buddhist events in general, and is not limited to events to hold a memorial service for the soul of the deceased. At the same time as praying for the deceased to go to paradise, it is also an opportunity to remember the deceased in modern times.

Type of legal requirement

"Chuin memorial service"...It is said that after death, one will be judged seven times every seven days by King Enma. Therefore, we perform the memorial service with the hope that the judgment will proceed favorably and lead us to paradise. Normally, it would be better to hold a memorial service every seven days, but in recent years, due to work circumstances, it is often difficult for family and relatives who live far away to gather after a few days. For this reason, many people hold the memorial service on the 7th day after the deceased's death, called the "Shonanaka Memorial Service" and the "Forty-ninth Day Memorial Service." It is becoming common for the first seven-day memorial service to be held on the same day as the funeral or funeral ceremony. Of course, some families and temples adhere to the legal requirements every seven days.

"Gakki memorial service"... It is also called Tsukimeinichi, and many of you probably know this word better. It's the day the deceased of the month passed away.

Eleven visits will be made, excluding the anniversary of the death, which is the day the person died, and the anniversary of the first anniversary of his death, which is one year later. By the way, the year of death is often referred to as the death anniversary, but the death anniversary is a word that indicates only the day of death, and the correct name is ``shogetsu death anniversary''.

The moon memorial service is a day to remember the deceased by visiting the grave and burning incense at the Buddhist altar instead of having a monk come and do a special memorial service such as reciting sutras or burning incense.

Unlike the middle shadow memorial service, it will be an endless memorial service.

“Hyakuka-nichi memorial service”: A memorial service held 100 days after the death of the deceased. It is also called ``sokkokuki,'' which means to graduate from the state of crying and grief. It is a memorial service that marks the turning point of returning to everyday life from the days of crying and sadness. In recent years, more and more people are omitting it or going only with their families.

"Nenkihohoyo"・・・This is a memorial service held on the anniversary of the death of a specific year.

It is held in the 3rd and 7th years, such as the 1st anniversary of the death, the 3rd anniversary of the 2nd year, the 7th anniversary of the 6th year, and the 13th anniversary of the 12th anniversary. It is common to mourn for the 33rd or 50th anniversary of the death as ``nenkiake,'' but there are also people who mourn at milestones such as the 17th and 100th anniversary. After this, Buddhist services will not be held, and the memorial service will end.

“Hatsu-Bon” is the first Obon after 49 days have passed since the death of the deceased. Obon is said to be the day when the deceased comes back. Among them, the first Obon is held more carefully than the usual Obon. In many families, family members, relatives, and friends who lived before their deaths gather to hold memorial services.

Due to work or family circumstances, there may be times when it is unavoidable that you cannot attend or participate. Especially since the moon memorial service is a never-ending memorial service, of course it would be difficult to hold a memorial service every time on the day of the moon memorial service.
